Up and Away!

My Mom was a huge hot air balloon fan. I decided to make a hot air balloon as my entry for the Heartfelt Creations Design Team Competition in honor of her. I had a great experience and I want to congratulate those that made the team. You are all amazing crafters.

This project features the Classic Petunia Collection. For the “basket”, cut a 12×12 paper down to 9×9. Score at 3″ & 6″. Rotate 90 degrees and score again at 3″ and 6″. Fold all score lines. Cut the 3″ score line on each side up to the edge of the central box. Apply double sided tape in an “L” pattern to the right of the cut.

Cut 6 pieces of twine that are 5″ long. Attach to basket: 2 top,2 bottom, 1 on each side. Remove backing of tape and form box. Each panel to the left of the cut will go in front of the panel with the tape.

For the balloon itself, I cut 3 light colored 6×6 panels and 3 dark 6×6 panels. For my template, I traced half of a 6″ diameter circle and then drew the bottom.

I cut out my template. I folded each 6×6 paper in half(right sides in), laid my template on the fold and traced it(should be the back of your paper). I cut out each one. I then attached my twine to 1 side of each balloon piece. Note: I did experiment with attaching the strings at various times during this project and there isn’t really as easier way.

On the opposite side (not the twine side) of each balloon piece, attach double sided tape. On balloon piece 1 and 3, I attached an end of pink lace to act as a hook.

Remove the tape backings and assemble your balloon.

Now the fun part! DECORATING!! I made all of the flower sizes in different colors. I used the Small Classic Petunia, Large Classic Petunia, Classic Petunia Bouquet, Delicate Border Basics and Fleur Border Basics.

For my flowers and leaves:

  • I did some with alcohol markers. I used PL2, BP4, DG2,DG3
  • I crinkled paper and then applied Distress Inks-Victorian Velvet and Dusty Concord
  • I used Cracked Pistachio and Forest Moss on the small leaves
  • I used Squeezed Lemonade and Antique Linen on the medium leaves and stamens
  • I used glossy paper and alcohol inks-Butterscotch,Oregano,Meadow and Lettuce
  • I used my flower shaping tool kit to shape all of the flowers and leaves

I used the tags from the paper pack to finish off the top of the balloon. I accented the flowers and tags with a white glitter and small pearls.

I hope you try this project and enjoy it as much as I did. It would be a great gift to hold candies, gift cards, small stuffed animal for a baby shower or any other creative reason you can come up with.

Share your talents and creativity with others to make them smile.
